Hymn Festival scheduled this Sunday

Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Cherokee will be celebrating the church year with a Hymn Festival at 3 p.m. Sunday. The festival will feature a community choir, congregational singing, instrumentalists, and a series of readings. Guest organist for the service will be Dr. Scott Hyslop of St. Lorenz Lutheran Church in Frankenmuth, Michigan.

Dr. Hyslop's educational background includes a DMA in Organ/Church music from the University of Michigan, where he was a student of Marilyn Mason, and a Master's Degree in Church Music from Concordia University in River Forest, Illinois. In addition to his formal studies, Dr. Hyslop studied with renowned church organist Paul Manz through the Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago and the Paul Manz Institute of Church Music, also in Chicago. He has also had additional study in organ performance with Maurice Clere at the Cathedral of St. Benigne in Dijon, France.

Hyslop has composed numerous pieces for voice, organ and instruments, published by various publishing houses. As a composer, Dr. Hyslop has studied with Conrad DeJong, Richard Hillert and James Aikman.

Hyslop has also written a biography, "The Journey Was Chosen : The Life and Work of Paul Manz," published in June of 2007 by MorningStar Music Publishers. He has served in congregations in Minneapolis, Chicago and Stuart, Florida, and presently serves as the Director of Parish Music at St. Lorenz in Frankenmuth, Michigan, and is a member of the Board of Directors for Lutheran Music Program, which is the home for Lutheran Summer Music. Dr. Hyslop was also the guest organist at the Hymn Festival held at Bethlehem Lutheran in 2008. He and his family reside in Birch Run, Michigan, and his wife Dora, is the grand-daughter of Frieda Mohn and Verna Pingel, both of whom reside in Cherokee.

A free will offering will be taken at Sunday's concert, with proceeds to be divided between Lutheran Summer Music Camp and Mid-Sioux Opportunities of Cherokee County.

Anyone who wishes to sing in the community choir, under the direction of Dave Hickman, is welcome and encouraged to participate. The choir will have just one rehearsal, to be held at 9:30 a.m. this Saturday. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 300 E. Bow Dr. in Cherokee.
