An historic move in 1979 by the Iowa High School Athletic Association and the Iowa Girls' High School Athletic Union to merge their State Cross Country Championships has proven to be sensationally popular, with the combined meet celebrating its 32nd running Saturday at Lakeside Golf Course in Kennedy Park, north of Fort Dodge.

The meet annually attracts over 5,000 cross country enthusiasts to cheer on 1,000 athletes in four classes, making the meet the largest of its kind in America.
