FORT DODGE - Although Chronicle Times coverage area schools did not have much representation at the State Cross Country meet in Fort Dodge on Saturday, there were a couple of runners wih ties to the coverage area who did very well in the Class 1A boys' competition.
Last week, we ran an article on Jay Welp, the former Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn runner who was competing for BCLUW-Conrad in this, his senior season. Welp finished in fifth place at Saturday's meet, just behind his BCLUW teammate Levi Storjohann. Welp's time was 16:26.6. The BCLUW team finished third with 142 points, trailing champion Cedar Falls NU High, which scored 107 points and runner-up Central Elkader, which posted a team score of 140.
Another runner with area ties did even better, though. Taylor Huseman of Manson-Northwest Webster, the son of Aurelia natives Frank and Brenda (Cougill) Huseman, finished second among Class 1A individual runners with a time of 16:04, 10 seconds behind champion Bill Spencer of Iowa Mennonite. His MNW team finished ninth in the team standings.
