SCORE, "Counselors to America's Small Business," is a nonprofit association which is dedicated to educating entrepreneurs and helping small business start, grow and succeed nationwide.

SCORE is a resource partner with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).

SCORE (an acronym for Service Core of Retired Executives) was founded in 1964, and is headquartered in Herndon, VA and Washington, D.C., but they have 350 chapters throughout the United States and its territories, with over 13,000 volunteers nationwide.

Both working and retired executives and business owners donate time and expertise as business counselors, so the association is now more accurately known as "Counselors to America's Small Business."

SCORE grows successful small businesses across America, one business at a time, by supporting our nation's proud heritage of entrepreneurs seeking opportunities and building success.

Since 1964, SCORE volunteers have donated their expertise in more than 600 skill areas to aid entrepreneurs.

More than 8.5 million entrepreneurs have been counseled by SCORE or attended SCORE workshops. With 364 offices for face-to-face mentoring and Ask SCORE for online advice, SCORE serves the needs of today's entrepreneurs.

SCORE mentors entrepreneurs through one-to-one business advising sessions on a full range of business topics. In the 1970s, when SCORE chapters were formed, SCORE expanded its services to offer workshops and seminars on a variety of business issues. In 1996, SCORE ventured online and began providing small business advice via email to meet the entrepreneur's need to have service on an around-the-clock basis.

Vista Chapter 617 in Storm Lake serves the counties of Buena Vista, Cherokee, Pocahontas, Ida and Sac. Jim Osegaro serves as the Vista Chapter chair and Sandy Johnson is the District Director.

SCORE has local office space at the Cherokee County Extension Office, 209 Centennial Dr., and several active and retired local business people have volunteered to provide free counseling to active and emerging small businesses.

You may contact the Extension Office at 712-225-6196, or the Vista Chapter Office of SCORE at 712-732-7267, to arrange for a counseling appointment.
