Area Veterans Day programs announced

There are several area special events being held on Veteran's Day, November 11, in honor of the men and women who have served our country through the years. Here is a list all the events so far announced.

Hy-Vee Food Store in Cherokee will be providing free breakfast to area veterans Thursday morning.

There will be a flag raising at 8:30 a.m. at Roosevelt Elementary School in Cherokee, followed by a Veteran's Day program in the school auditorium.

The Cherokee Middle School will be having a Veteran's Day program at approximately 9:45 a.m. in the CMS gym.

A Veteran's Day program will be presented at 10 a.m. in the gymnasium at the Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn High School in Marcus.

The Aurelia school will be presenting a Veteran's Day program at 11 a.m. in the school gym.

The Cherokee Washington High School Program begins at 2 p.m. in the WHS Auditorium and all veterans and the public are invited to attend.

Guest speaker for the Program will be U.S. Marine Staff Sergeant Charles W. Steck, Detachment Commander for RSS Sioux City. His message will address Veterans Day, as well as current events.

After the WHS Program, the veterans are invited to attend a get-together in the WHS Library where refreshments and memories will be served.

American Legion Treptow Post 230 will be holding the 6th Annual Soup Supper, featuring chili, chicken noodle soup, cinnamon rolls, bars, pie and coffee, from 6 p.m. - 8:30 p.m at 516 W. Willow St. (the old Garfield School) There is no charge, but there will be a freewill donation. There is ample parking in the former school playground, as well as on the streets east and west of the school. The meal will be served in the gymnasium.

At the same location at 7 p.m., a special guest, Stephen Bruggman, will present an inspiring talk. A Coast Guard veteran from Lennox S.D. who lost his leg serving our country, Bruggman is a past participant in the Veterans Games, and now provides volunteer instruction in kayaking and surfing at the National Veterans Summer Sports Clinic, as well as participating in the adaptive Alpine and Nordic skiing event at the National Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic. Bruggman is a 2010 recipient of Sports Illustrated's "Profiles in Courage" award, and was recently profiled on Sioux Falls' KELO television. as a person who is "able and willing, with the secret ingredient of effort."
