Nearly half of the men and women who have served in U.S. military foces during times of war are alive today. On Veterans Day we salute them and all who have served.

* American Revolution : 290,000 participants, 4000 deaths in service.

* War of 1812 (1812-15): 287,000 participants, 2000 deaths in service

* Indian Wars (approx. 1817-1898) : 106,000 participants, 1000 deaths in service

* Mexican War (1846-48) : 79,000 participants, 13,000 deaths in service

* Civil War (1861-1965) : 2,213,00 Union participants, 364,000 Union deaths in service ; 1,000,000 Confederate participants, 133,821 Confederate deaths in service

* Spanish-American War (1898-1902) : 392,000 participants, 11,000 deaths in service

* World War I (1917-18) : 4,744,000 participants, 116,000 deaths in service, 3,400 living veterans

* World War II (9/16/40 - 7/25/47) : 16,535,000 paricipants, 406,000 deaths in service, 5,940,000 living veterans

* Korean Conflict (6/27/50 - 1/31/55) : 6,807,000 participants, 55,000 deaths in service, 4,064,000 living veterans

* Vietnam Era (8/5/64 - 5/7/75): 9,200,000 participants, 109,000 deaths in service, 8,113,000 living veterans

* Gulf War Era (8/29/90 - on) : 3,900,000 participants, 9600 deaths in service, 2,223,000 living veterans
