Cattle feeders are reminded to register for the workshop, "Margin and Risk Management for Cattle Feeders," by December 6. The workshop will be Dec. 9, 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., at the Community Center in Wall Lake.
During the workshop, participants will market fed cattle and purchase feeder cattle and corn. The computer-simulation, which uses market prices, will provide immediate results about whether their marketing strategy was profitable.
"It's a great way to learn about risk management tools like futures, options and livestock insurance, without having to worry about the possibility of real losses!" remarked Shane Ellis, ISU Extension Economist and workshop leader. Participants will also learn how to use the crush margin to lock in a profit.
The workshop is co-sponsored by the Iowa Beef Center, Land O' Lakes Purina Feed, 360 Feeds LLC at Ralston and the Sac County Cattlemen's Association. To register for the workshop, contact Tom Duncan, Sac/Carroll County Extension Coordinator at 712-792-2364 or e-mail email@example.com. Pre-registration is required, but the $25 fee is payable at the door.
