4-H/FFA Market Beef Weigh-In

Any Cherokee County 4-H'er who is interested in exhibiting a market beef steer, market beef heifer, a dairy market steer, or Advanced Cattle Feeding (Pen of Three) animals at the Cherokee County Fair, any district or state fair, and/or Ak-Sar-Ben must bring their animal(s) to the Market Beef Weigh-In on Jan. 8, 2011, in the show arena at the Cherokee County Fairgrounds.

We will start weighing and tagging possible market beef project animals at 10 a.m. and will be finished at noon. There will be a $1.25 charge per tag. To ensure a smooth traffic flow, please enter the fair grounds at the west gate and approach the show arena from the south. This is the only time that the Cherokee County Extension Office will be sponsoring a weigh-in for all 2011 fair beef projects.

Any animal weighed during the weigh in will be ID'ed, so you do not need to fill out any other identification papers by May 15, 2011. Breeding Heifers do not need to be weighed on Jan. 8, 2011, but they will need to be ID'ed and tagged by May 15, 2011. All exhibitors with ID'ed animals do need to fill out Livestock Entries Forms for the 2011 Cherokee County Fair and turn them in to the Extension Office by deadline in June 2011. That deadline will be announced at a later time

Any animal weighed by itself at the beef weigh-in will be eligible for the Rate-of-Gain contest during the 2011 Cherokee County Fair. The Rate-of-Gain contest awards the 4-H'er whose animal had the best daily Rate-of-Gain from the January weigh-in date to the fair weigh-in date. Your animals must be weighed on Jan. 8, 2011, in order to be eligible for the Rate-of-Gain.

4-H'ers may also weigh beef animals for their Advanced Cattle Feeding (Pen of Three) Project. The Advanced Cattle Feeding class requires 4-H'ers to raise a group of three cattle as a pen and keep detailed records of feed and medication. This project is intended to help 4-H'ers learn more about the business end of raising market cattle. Any beef animal that is part of your pen of three, but is weighed separately can be entered in the Rate-of-Gain contest. In addition, any animal in a pen of three can be shown as an individual on halter in the regular market classes. Advanced Cattle Feeding project animals can also be weighed on any certified scale between Nov. 1, 2010 and Jan. 15, 2011. The weigh ticket must be submitted to the Cherokee County Extension Office by Jan. 15, 2011.

If you are thinking of showing your animal(s) at Ak-Sar-Ben or the Iowa State Fair, we will need to do a Retinal Image or a DNA sample. Cherokee County's Market Beef weigh-in is an approved verification site. Both the 4-H'er and a parent/guardian must be present to sign the forms required for state fair nomination. If either one can not be present, a signed waiver must be presented to the weigh-in personal. Waivers are available at the Cherokee County Extension Office. There is a charge for the ear tags and Retinal Images/DNA that will be done that day.

If you would like to know more about 4-H and the various 4-H programs available, please contact Brenda Medick at the Cherokee County Extension Office at 225-6196.
