Dreckman free throws clinch it; Foresman scores 24

MARCUS - The Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn girls kept their 2010-11 basketball record spotless with a hard-earned two-point War Eagle Conference win over Gehlen Catholic of LeMars on Friday.

Lady Eagles' junior Kayla Foresman "played a real good game on both ends of the floor," according to her coach, Tim Dreckman, who said that Foresman "kept us in the game in the first half," scoring 16 of the team's 22 points. Fellow junior Erica Dreckman came on strong in the second half, scoring all 17 of her points, including the game-winning free throws in the final seconds.

The game was knotted at 8-all after one quarter and again at 22-all at the half. MMC was able to open a slight 6-point gap at the third quarter break, but the final margin indicates that it was a real wire-to-wire barn burner.

Thanks to those two huge free throws by Dreckman in the closing seconds, MMC ended up on top, 52-50, moving their season record to 3-0.

Foresman finished with 24 points and Dreckman 17. Foresman had a double-double, also grabbing 10 rebounds, and Dreckman added five assists, five steals and two blocked shots to her overall game statistics.

Senior Stephanie Specht rebounded well with seven caroms, and also played a real good floor game for the Lady Eagles. Adding to the MMC effort were juniors Jalyn Doeden, who had four rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks, and Reagan McDaniel, who swiped three errant Gehlen passes.

Amber Timmins, with 15 points, and Steph Rohe, with 13, led Gehlen's scoring.

The Eagles canned 22-62 field goals for 35 percent, and was 7-14 from the free throw line.

Coach Dreckman said "both teams played very aggressive man-to-man defense the whole game, and I was pleased with the effort from the girls throughout the game. It was a great game to win."
