ONAWA - The River Valley boys' basketball team lost the season opener to the undefeated West Monona squad on Tuesday.
RV Coach Dean Norris said his team "dug ourselves a hole early, and were down 18 at halftime." The Wolverines were able to get the margin into single digits in the 4th quarter, but they wound up losing by a score of 74-59.
Coach Norris said he was really proud of how hard his team played and never gave up, but the Wolverines committed a total of 31 turnovers in the contest, and the coach felt that that fact "proved to be our downfall."
Mark Peterson led the Wolverines in scoring with 27 points, while Zak Gander just missed a double/double with 14 points and 9 rebounds. Brody Riedemann added five assists, and his brother Brennan had four steals to lead the team in that category.
"This is a young squad, with not a lot of varsity experience," concluded RV Coach Norris, "so I look for us to improve as the season goes on, if the kids keep working as hard as they have been ."
River Valley's next contest is a Western Valley Conference match-up with Maple Valley/Anthon-Oto in Correctionville on Friday.
