Friday, December 10, 2010

GRANVILLE - The undefeated Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn girls overcame the loss of four-year starter Kayla Foresman due to injury on the game's first play and persevered to a 57-33 win over Granville Spalding in War Eagle Conference basketball here Tuesday night.

Several MMC players picked up the slack in Foresman's absence, with Erica Dreckman leading the Eagles with 12 points, followed by Kelsey Sears 11, Carly Lehnhoff nine, Anna Wilcox six, and Stephanie Specht five. Caitlin Murphy led Spalding with 11 points.

MMC leaped to an 18-2 lead after the first quarter and ran off to a 30-12 halftime lead to take control of the game.

Wilcox, Specht, and Sears paced MMC's 35-24 domination on the boards, each grabbing seven rebounds, while Reagan McDaniel snagged six, and Dreckman four.

Dreckman, Lehnhoff, and McDaniel led in assists with three apiece. MMC notched 24-70 field goals for 34 percent, and cashed in 6-13 free throws.

"Once again, I was very pleased with the performance of the girls play," said MMC coach Tim Dreckman. "Kayla Foresman went down the first play of the game and did not play the rest of the way. It was great to see all the girls step up their game when Kayla went down.

"Anna Wilcox came in off the bench to play a great game on both ends of the floor. Stephanie Specht did a great job rebounding and Kelsey Sears came out of her slump as she shot the ball well and took it to the basket really well. It was a great team effort win."
