Wolfpack beats WHS girls late

HULL - The Hull Western Christian girls outscored Cherokee 15-6 in the fourth frame on the way to a 58-43 Lakes Conference basketball victory here Tuesday night.

The young Cherokee squad stayed with the Wolfpack much of the way and was within two points early in the fourth quarter when the hosts went into a delay game offense, forcing Cherokee to foul, and then meshing several free throws down the stretch to seal the deal.

HWC led 16-10 after one quarter, and 33-26 at halftime, before taking a 43-37 lead into the final eight minutes.

Jackie Wilson led Cherokee's scoring with 14 points, while Shanon Shaefer tallied seven, and Megan Carlson, Megan Hummel, and Katie Sambrano six apiece.

Brook Wolterstorf led HWC with 18 points, and Katie Gesink chipped in with 13 points.

Tasha Larsen and Wilson led Cherokee on the boards with seven rebounds each, while Hummel snared six, and Shaefer and Taylor Woods four apiece. Shaefer and Sambrano led in assists with three each, and Shaefer also recorded w whopping seven steals.

"We started off slow and found ourselves down 10-2 and then fought hard to pull to within two points several times in the third quarter and early in the fourth quarter," noted Cherokee coach Heath Hagberg. "They went into a pretty solid delay game with over six minutes left and really took charge the remainder of the game. We ended up having to put them on the line and they coverted well from the line down the stretch.

"Jackie Wilson played an exceptional game for us on the inside with 14 points and seven rebounds. We were limited by excessive turnovers and poor shooting from the arc."

The Cherokee girls host Ridge View at 6 p.m. tonight in a weather makeup from last Saturday, and travel to Spirit Lake Friday night before entering the holiday break.
