MARCUS - The 9th-rated Hinton girls went on a 32-23 scoring run in the second half to break open a tightly contested War Eagle Conference basketball game between the 6-1 Blackhawks, and 7-0 MMC girls and claim a 57-42 win.
Mallory Thoreson and Sadie Schuck scored 36 points between them to pace the Blackhawks, who shot 15 more free throws than MMC, sinking 13-22, compared to the Eagles' 3-7 effort. Thoreson tallied 19 points and Schuck 17. Ashton Moody added 12 for Hinton's cause.
Kelsey Sears led MMC with 12 points, and Erica Dreckman scored 11, with the Eagle offense and defense hurt by the absence of senior wing Kayla Foresman, who is out for the rest of the season with a knee injury. Reagan McDaniel scored six points for MMC and Stephanie Specht added five.
MMC sank 20-56 field goals for 36 percent, and was just 1-11 from the three-point line. Hinton canned 24-61 shots for 39 percent, including 4-11 from the three-point arc.
Specht led the Eagles in rebounds with eight, followed by Carly Lehnhoff and Jalyn Doeden five each, and Dreckman four. Schuck had 10 boards to lead Hinton. Dreckman led her team in steals with six and in assists with four. Specht and Doeden had four steals apiece.
The 7-1 MMC girls return to action after the holiday break, hosting Remsen St. Mary's Jan. 4.
