At 6:19 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 28, Cherokee police received a complaint from the Buena Vista County Communications Center, in reference to a vehicle that was stolen from a residence in Storm Lake.
The vehicle was last seen at the Highway 3 and 71 truck stop where the driver had stolen gas and headed west on Highway 3.
At 6:36 a.m., Cherokee police attempted to do a stop on the vehicle at the entrance of Hilltop Trailer Court. The vehicle eluded police, and a high speed chase went through Cherokee before the vehicle left the city limits and headed towards Aurelia.
Cherokee police pursued the vehicle to Aurelia, where the vehicle was wrecked and the driver left the vehicle and led police on a foot pursuit.
The subject then stole a 2002 Ford Focus from an Aurelia resident and fled the area.
Cherokee police have charged Johnathon Richard Tuttle 27 of Olin, Iowa with Reckless Driving, Driving while Suspended, Eluding, Failure to Maintain Control, Prohibited Passing and Failure to Obey Stop Sign.
A warrant has been issued for his arrest. The Cherokee police were assisted by the Storm Lake police and their K9 unit and the Aurelia police.
Following an investigation, the Storm Lake police also charged Tuttle with Theft, 2nd degree, a Class D felony and Theft, 5th degree. As of Thursday, Tuttle was still at large and being sought by the police and anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to contact the Storm Lake Police Department at 712-732-8010.
The Buena Vista County Sheriff's Department also assisted in responding to the incident.
