New artists add sizzle to popular musical weekend

Plans for the 11th annual Cherokee Jazz and Blues Festival are currently being finalized. Dates for the highly popular Festival are Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, January 7-9.

Headlining this year's Festival will be Levee Town and opening act Adam Schroeder Quartet on Saturday, Jan. 8, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Main Concert at Western Iowa Tech Community College Conference Center.

Levee Town is a radiantly hot rockin' Americana Jazz & Blues foursome out of Kansas City. Their music ranges from covers of Willie Dixon, Muddy Waters, Freddie King, Bob Dylan, and Big Joe Turner, to originals like Go to Heaven, The Winter Song, and Forgive the Intrusion. The sound is a searing mix of traditional rock'n'roll, blues, and rockabilly.

Besides Levee Town and the Schroeder Quartet, other acts that will be appearing at the Festival for the first time include the Mary Bridget Davies Band and the Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church Choir of Sioux City.

Also, popular, in-demand bands that are returning from previous Festivals are the Northwest Iowa Musicians, Bob Dorr & The Blue Band, Erick Hovey Band, and David Zollo. Plus, local entertainers will be featured throughout the Festival, including Jimmy Davis and Friends and Dr. David Klee & The Jazz Express.

Currently, the Jazz and Blues Festival Planning Committee is hard at work lining up volunteers to help with the many duties that are called for during the Festival. If you would like to help out with the Festival contact event organizer Jim Adamson at 229-9502 or the Cherokee Chamber of Commerce at 225-6414.
