HAWARDEN - The fast improving Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn boys forged a 22-14 halftime lead on the way to a 51-27 War Eagle Conference victory over West Sioux here Friday night.
The Eagles of coach Pat Bird netted 18-51 field goals for 35 percent, including 4-11 three-balls, and sank 11-16 free throws in the win.
West Sioux tallied 11-41 shots for a cold 27 percent, and was 2-14 from the three-point arc, and just 3-12 from the free throw line.
Zach Specht led MMC's scoring with 17 points, while Dylan Spieler scored nine, and John Hoefling eight. Spieler and Hoefling also snagged nine rebounds each to lead the eagles on the boards. Specht had seven steals to lead the MMC defense, and also led his team in assists with three.
Austin Petersen paced the host Falcons with 11 points.
"Our big guys really crashed the boards well for us," said MMC coach Bird. "John Hoefling and Dylan Spieler each had nine rebounds and Tyler Prunty pulled down seven boards. Specht was all over the court with 17 points, seven steals, and five rebounds.
"I really like the intensity that our guys gave been playing with since thge holiday break, and Zach is one of the leaders in that department, also."
The MMC teams host South O'Brien Friday night.
