MARCUS - The Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn boys erased an 8-point halftime deficit with a stirring 25-14 scoring run in the third quarter, but it was to no avail as Granville Spalding righted the ship and sank some crucial baskets to go along with 12-14 free throws in the fourth period to claim a 72-64 War Eagle Conference basketball game here last week.
Freshman Dylan Spieler led the MMC offense with a career high 27 points, including a school record seven three-point field goals. John Hoefling added 10 points, and Zach Specht nine for MMC.
Colby Murphy led Spalding's scoring with 21 points, followed by Nic Auchstetter 19, Brian Hanson 12, and Michael Grady 11.
Spalding made 21-48 field goals for 44 percent, including a 12-26 effort from the three-point line, and 18-23 free throws.
MMC sank 23-63 shots for 37 percent, was 12-37 from the three-ball line, and was 6-9 for free throws.
"We had a great third quarter in which we erased an 8-point halftime deficit and took a 3-point lead," said MMC coach Pat Bird. "In the fourth quarter they hit some crucial shots and made 12-14 free throws. We missed several good looks at the basket down the stretch, and their free throw shooting sealed the game for them.
"Their 12 three-pointers were a complete turn-around from the first time we played them (an MMC win). In that game they made zero three-point shots."
The MMC boys play at Remsen-Union Tuesday night.
