Cherokee WHS ITED scheduled Jan. 31-Feb. 4

Thursday, January 27, 2011

Washington High School will be administering the Iowa Test of Educational Development (ITED) to the freshmen, sophomores and juniors from January 31 through February 4.

It is important for students to come prepared to do their best on each test. For this reason, it is recommended that everyone get a good night's sleep each night and to eat a good breakfast each morning.

To provide an optimal testing environment, students have been placed in small groups, usually assigned to their homeroom teacher. A calculator can be used for Monday's Math test and #2 pencils will be needed for each day's testing. Students will also be allowed to bring bottled water or sports drink and quiet snack foods. The high school's HUB will be selling snacks for those who are interested in purchasing them.

In addition to the regular tests, the Cherokee School District has been chosen to administer sample tests to its students. These tests will be used to assemble the new battery of tests that will be offered in the future.

Because of testing, high school schedules will be different all week. Seniors especially will need to pay attention because they will not be required to be present during testing, but will be responsible for being on time to all classes. Day-to-day class schedules will be listed at the bottom.

The importance of the test results becomes farther reaching every year. Not only are schools required to report out on their students' progress to determine effective teaching, but the scores now can determine whether or not a student will be allowed to enroll in college courses during the junior and senior year.

New state legislation entitled Senior Year Plus requires testers to score above the 40th percentile to qualify for college level courses. This includes all courses offered through the Western Iowa Tech Community College partnership as well as the online courses that many students take at the school's expense to ease the cost of college.
