Aurelia Commercial Club honors co-Citizens of the Year

Monday, January 31, 2011

AURELIA - At its annual Kick-off Dinner, this year held at the Aurelia Golf Course clubhouse, the Aurelia Commercial Club honored its co-Citizens of the Year. Two people shared the honor this year because the vote by Aurelia citizens ended in a dead heat.

One of the Citizens of the Year, Albert Kreutz, was introduced by Commercial Club Vice President Dick Vogt. Kreutz was honored for his willingness to lend a helping hand wherever it is needed, with his "chauffeuring" service for Sunset Knoll residents and others drawing special notice and appreciation.

Dennis Allen introduced the other Citizen of the Year, Randy Nicodemus. Randy was cited for his long-time service to the American Legion, his willingness to help out neighbors, and his assisting the Aurelia School Drama and Music Departments when they need assistance, doing everything from building sets for school plays to providing transportation to out-of-town contests or performances.

The presentation of the awards was preceded by a well-attended social hour and a delicious buffet supper, served by the Aurelia Cafe.

Following the awards, the audience was treated to an informative talk and slide show on the barn quilts of Sac County by Sue Peyton.

The Barn Quilt Project was initiated by Peyton's son Kevin in 2005 as a 4-H project. Kevin hoped to restore pride in the old barns in Sac County, many of which were in disrepair, by sprucing them up a little with the colorful barn quilts, and he hoped to inspire others to follow suit.

Kevin and his family have since constructed, painted, and mounted 55 8' barn quilts and one 11' barn quilt in Sac County, and, inspired by their efforts, several other Sac County residents have made their own barn, house and yard quilts as well. Mission accomplished.
