ALTA - The Alta-Aurelia boys led all the way in beating Northwest Conference rival Sioux Central here in basketball action Thursday, 67-56.
Jalen Henningsen scored 18 points to lead the Warriors, while Jaden Holton and Ryan Friedrich each scored 13 and AJ Lange added nine. Friedrich had a double-double night, adding 10 rebounds to his 13 points, while Holton has seven caroms and Austin Glawe five. Holton, Friedrich and Weiland dished out four assists apiece, and Henningsen (4) and Holton (3) paced the Warriors' total of 13 steals.
Sioux Central had three players score in double figures - Adam Ehlers with 16 points, Brad Ripke with 13, and Mickenzie Nelson with 12. Ehlers had a double-double, also grabbing 12 boards.
Alta-Aurelia coach Dean Lietz said his team got off to a great start by being aggressive in the first quarter, adding that the Warriors made five three-point shots and also played great defense. Friedrich "had an outstanding game," said his coach, and "Henningsen and Holton also played very well. Glawe and Marshall didn't have great stats, but their contributions defensively were a big difference in the game, as they made Ehlers and Ripke earn every point they got."
The Warriors took an 8-6 mark into a Friday night game against Manson-Northwest Webster, and Tuesday they face highly-ranked Storm Lake St. Mary's at Alta on "Warriors Helping Warriors" Support the Troops Night. Those attending the game are encouraged to bring items to send to the three Alta-Aurelia wrestling coaches who are currently deployed in Afghanistan, and their fellow soldiers.
