George Hazen Pingrey was born on Sept. 27, 1918, in Ida Grove, the son of Frank and Louisa (Watkins) Pingrey. He graduated from Holstein High School. He taught country school for five years before being drafted into the United States Army Air Corps. He served in WWII before being honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant. He graduated from the Wisconsin School of Banking and entered into his lifelong career of banking.
George met his life partner in Ruth E. Henderson and they were married on Aug. 3, 1941. They were blessed with two children: Cheryl and Mark. George made a living for his family working for 17 years at Central Trust & Savings Bank in Cherokee, and then 25 years as the President of Sac City State Bank, also acquiring the 1st Trust and Savings Bank of Aurelia in 1989.
He served his community through various entities including the Masonic Lodge, Kiwanis, and as Chairman of the Loring Hospital Board for 25 years. George and Ruth were also lifelong members of the United Methodist Church. To continue his legacy George's family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the George and Ruth Pingrey Scholarship Fund at Buena Vista University, the United Methodist Church in Sac City or Loring Hospital.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 69 years, Ruth; his children: Cheryl P. (Larry) Dorsey, Ph.D., of Superior, Colo., Mark D. (Barbara) Pingrey of Lafayette, Colo.; grandchildren: Heather P. (Chris Martin) Dorsey, Kyle H. (Penny) Pingrey, Elizabeth H. (Jeff Trauba) Dorsey, and Matthew D. (Jennifer) Pingrey; great-grandchildren: James Pingrey, Phillip Pingrey, and Sadie Trauba, and many extended family members and friends.
