REMSEN - The host Remsen-Union boys went on a 13-2 scoring run fueled by Brian West's three consecutive three-pointers late in the first half to pull away from a battling Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn team here Friday night and claim a 73-50 War Eagle Conference victory.
The Eagles led most of the first half, 18-12 after the first quarter, and 27-24 with two minutes to go in the second quarter when the Rockets and West went off. MMC fought to within eight points in the third quarter before the talented Rockets put the game away in the final frame.
Josh Bohnenkamp led R-U with 15 points, followed by West 14, and Jacob Fiedler 11.
Zach Specht paced MMC with 18 points, followed by Dylan Spieler 13, Tyler Prunty eight, and John Hoefling seven. Spieler also grabbed nine rebounds and Hoefling seven to lead the Eagles in that category.
MMC made 19-53 field goals for 36 percent, including 5-13 for three-balls, and 7-11 from the free throw line. R-U sank 21-69 shots for 48 percent, including 12-27 three-pointers, and 3-8 free throws.
Tanner Hilbrands led R-U in rebounding with 11, Kraig Alesch snagged eight, and Alex Hansen six.
"We were doing fine until they started nailing three-point shots right and left," said MMC coach Pat Bird. "That stretched our defense out and opened up things for their inside game. Zach Specht had a nice game for us with 18 points and four rebounds."
The MMC terams travel to Le Mars Gehlen Friday night.
