MMC's Pearson, Mugge to District

OKOBOJI - In Saturday's Class 1A Sectional Wrestling Tournament here, Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn's Jacob Pearson beat Emmetsburg's Nick Schany (32-6) 5-3 to win the 171 lb. championship, and the Eagles' Dillon Mugge finished runner-up to undefeated Brenden Ter Wee of West Lyon (32-0) at 285, so both Eagle juniors advance to the District Tournament this Saturday. Mugge lost 3-0 to Ter Wee.

Team Standings:

Graettinger-Terril, 181.5l; Emmetsbrg/Ruthven-Ayrshire, 165; Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn, 135; Sibley-Ocheydan, 118; Okoboji, 110; Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn, 93; West Lyon, 80.

Two MMC grapplers finished third to narrowly miss out on a District berth, with Tyler Pearson third at 135 pounds, and Jacob Meehan third at 160.

In winning his Sectional championship, Jacob Pearson (30-5) drew a bye, then beat Marshall Eddy of Sibley-Ocheyedan 15-2, before clipping Schany in the finals.

Mugge (19-13) drew a bye, then beat Patrick Coleman of S-O 3-2 in triple overtime, before losing 3-0 to Ter Wee in the finals.

Tyler Pearson (8-6) was third and did not get a wrestle-back chance after getting a bye, losing 5-2 to Trent Lundgren of G-T, and pinning Gabe Goehring of Okoboji in 1:10.

Meehan (26-7) also did not get a wrestle-back chance after pinning Dylan Brockshus of S-O in 2:52, losing 4-1 to E/RA's Austin McCartan, and then beating Brett Flynn of HMS 8-6 in overtime.

Fourth-place finishers for MMC were Jacob Letsche (16-17) at 140, who was 1-2 in matches for the day; and Justin Theisen (15-17) at 189, who was 0-2 with a bye.

Dylan Rolfes (19-12) was fifth for the Eagles at 145, with a 1-1 record and a bye; and Mitch Brady (7-17) was sixth at 152, going 0-2 with a bye.
