Braves' Anderson, Back qualify for Districts

SPIRIT LAKE - The young Cherokee Braves qualified two wrestlers to Class 2A District action in Sheldon Saturday, after competing in Sectional Tournament action here Saturday.

For the Braves. junior Zac Anderson won the 152-pound weight class, and junior 285-pounder Miah Back qualified with a runner-up finish.

Host Spirit Lake Park won the team title with 239.5 points, followed by Estherville-LC 173.5, Sheldon/South O'Brien 147, Cherokee 135, Central Lyon 132, and Laurens-Marathon/Sioux Central 108.

Anderson (28-7) pinned all three foes at 152, beginning with a 3:19 fall over Mark Unekis of Central Lyon, a 5:35 fall over Alex Blomquist of E-LC, and a 3:23 pin win in the finals over Cody Strand of LM/SC.

Back (23-14) pinned Alex Postma of Central Lyon in 3:46 in his opening match, then dropped a 7-3 decision to Gabe Bonner of E-LC, before pinning Nathan Kyle of SLP in 1:25 for runner-up.

Three Braves placed third, just missing out on a District berth, as the top two wrestlers qualify. They are Jack Letsche at 140, Rick Weaver at 145, and Gabe Conley at 171.

Letsche (21-12) lost 14-6 to Billy Snyder of E-LC, and pinned Matt Williams of S-SO in 2:51; Weaver (19-16) was pinned in 1:50 by John Estep of CL, and pinned Toby Maggert of S-SO in 3:02; and Conley (10-24) pinned Brandon Fogelman of LM-SC in 3:)7, was pinned in 5:01 by Riley Edwards of E-LC, and pinned Jacob Jenness of SLP in 1:06.

Austin Agnitsch was fourth for Cherokee at 103 with an 0-2 record, Nate Laursen was fourth with an 0-2 mark at 125, Tyler McLaughlin fifth at 160 with a 1-1 match record, Manny Bustos fifth at 189 with a 1-1 record, and Trevor Devitt fifth at 215 with a 1-1 record.

"Sectionals are full of highs and lows," said Cherokee coach Jason Wood. "It is always sad when your season comes to an end. It is also exciting when you qualify for Districts and realize you are close to being a State qualifier.

"I am very proud of all our wrestlers, Congratulations to Zac and Miah for making Districts."

S-SO advanced four wrestlers into Saturday's 2A Districts starting at noon at Sheldon, including champions Tanner Matthews (39-1) at 171, and Bruce McWilliams (37-4) at 189; and runners-up Austin Bainbridge (30-7) at 103, and Tim Jenness (17-10) at 160.

All third-place wrestlers serve as alternates in the event the runner-up or champion cannot participate in Districts in their respective weight class due to injury, or any other development.
