Jean M. Hein, age 93, of Bettendorf, passed away on Saturday, February 5, 2011, at Select Specialty Hospital in Davenport. Services to celebrate her life will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, February 12, 2011, at Weerts Funeral Home, Kimberly and Jersey Ridge in Davenport. Eastern Star services will be held in conjunction with the funeral service by Davenport Chapter #178. The family will greet friends from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Private burial will be held at Davenport Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of expressions of sympathy, memorials may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital or to Camp Courageous.
Jean was born in 1917 in Fremont, Nebraska to Frank and Katie Chilcoat. She was united in marriage to Lester L. Hein on December 19, 1937 in Fremont, and he preceded her in death on September 16, 1984. Lester and Jean farmed for 13 years before leaving the farm in 1951 to take employment with Archer Petroleum in Crete, Nebraska, where they lived for 9 years. The couple then transferred to Davenport in 1960. Jean worked for Kelly Services for several years before working for a food brokerage company where she retired. She was a member of St. Matthew Evangelical Lutheran Church in Davenport, Royal Neighbors of America where she joined in 1933 at the age of 16, Wednesday Morning Breakfast Club and Daughters of the Nile Chapter #10. She was also a 50 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, serving as Worthy Matron in 1959 in Crete, Nebraska Chapter #104 and then two terms for Davenport Chapter #178. Jean was a former member of ABWA Bend of the River Chapter and Pilot Club.
Survivors include daughters, Anita (Rick) Hegland of Bettendorf and Linda (Greg) Faust of Charlottesville, Virginia; son, Jim (Carol) Hein of Bettendorf; grandchildren, Kimberly (Jim) Hutzell, Jason (Carol) Hein, Michael (Kristin) Lizak, Bob (Lysa) Hegland, Doug (Julie) Hegland, Meredith (Jeremy) Roberts and Katie Faust; great grandchildren, Makayla, Amber and Kaleb Hutzell, Jacob, Tyler and Lucas Hein, Benjamin and Samuel Lizak, Addison and Bryson Hegland, Andrew, Adam and Grant Hegland. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a daughter, Carol Ann; two brothers, Lester and Harold; and a sister, Clara Weddle.
