In January of 2005, while on a medical team mission to Honduras, Dr. Gary Carlton, a surgeon from Sioux City, was confronted by an elderly woman who was disappointed following her visit with him. When he asked why she was disappointed she replied, "because I am hungry and you didn't bring any food."
From this trip Kids Against Hunger of Le Mars Iowa, now Then Feed Just One, was put into place. To help one of the biggest problems that most people in 3rd world countries face starvation.
For the past several years, the Le Mars group called Kids Against Hunger have been working with several Northwest Iowa communities doing packing events to provide food to several Third world countries like Honduras, Haiti, Tanzania, and East Africa. In this past year the Le Mars group has formed their own organization called Then Feed Just One. Based on a quote from Mother Theresa "If you can't feed a hundred people, then feed just one."
Once again this year organizers are looking forward to a Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn Then Feed Just One packing event. They are asking for volunteers to help out on Sunday March 13th starting at noon.
With your financial donations they will break down the bulk products of rice, soy, dried vegetables, and vitamins and minerals that are so necessary to your body. This food will then be repackaged and six meals will be put into one package, A total of 36 packages will go into one box and provide 216 meals per box.
The boxes are then put onto pallets and stored until there are enough pallets to fill a shipping container so they can go to their destination such as Honduras and other 3rd world countries. The cost for all of this to happen is .16 cents per meal. The MMC group is asking for $25 minimum donation to help with buying the food and shipping cost. They will take any donation weather it is smaller or large. It is the teams hope to keep up with their donations from the last two years, which has averaged around $13,000.
This packing event is a wonderful opportunity for every family in the MMC School district to help others. You can sign up to help out either at your local church, the MMC high school, or contact a team member. Checks can be made payable to Then Feed Just One and payment is requested to be made by Monday March 7, 2011 so they know how much food can be ordered for the event.
They have added new team members to help out with this great event. Team members include - Tom and Becky Leavitt, Tom Hohbach, Al and Darcy Reuter, Carla Weber, Laura Letsche, Linda Bird, Adam and Dawn Roberts, Steve and Rachel Holmes, Brian and LuAnn Miller, Brian and Shannon Letsche, Shelly Brownmiller, and Jerry and Lisa Alesch. These team members represent the four churches in Marcus who are hosting the event Faith Lutheran, Peace Lutheran, Grace Methodist, and Holy Name Catholic.
