SIBLEY - Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn advanced two wrestlers to this week's state tournament in Des Moines as the result of Saturday's Class 1A District Tournament here.
Graettinger-Terril took team honors with 93.5 points, followed by Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn 88, Woodbury Central 80, Emmetsburg/Armstrong-Ringsted 68, Akron-Westfield 55, West Sioux 30, Okoboji 32, Lawton-Bronson 32, Sibley-Ocheyedan 29, MMC 28, Kingsley-Pierson 22, West Lyon 18, Alta-Aurelia 10, Hinton 0.
MMC's Pearson beat Isidro Topete of West Sioux 10-3 in first round, and then beat Nick Schany of Emmetsburg-AR 9-5 in the finals.
The only other area school which competed at Sibley was Alta-Aurelia, which had two wrestlers competing. Jared Schmitz, 140, was pinned by Skylar Rice of Emmetsburg/Ruthven-Ayrshire in 0:46 in his first match, and was pinned by Graettinger-Terril's Heath Marchand in 5:01 in his second match.
Garrett Van Houten, 215, was pinned by Josh Treybal of Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn in 0:30 in his first match, then came back and pinned Woodbury Central's Nathan Mellies in 0:27, but did not have the opportunity for a wrestle-back.
MMC's Pearson meets sophomore Nate Aitchison (27-10) of West Hancock Britt in first-round action at State, and Mugge meets junior Joe Koehn (40-2) of Valley Community Elgin.
