ALTA - The Alta-Aurelia girls led by one after the first quarter in first-round girls' Class 2A District basketball tournament action against Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn here on Saturday, then steadily increased their lead the rest of the way, posting a win by a final score of 53-38.
Jordan Henningsen paced the Warriors' scoring with 17 points, 13 of them coming on 13-16 shooting from the free throw line. Henningsen also led the team in rebounds, with seven, assists, with eight, and steals, with four. The senior was far from a one-woman show, though, as Emily Grieme scored nine and grabbed five boards, Courtney Van Haaften also scored nine points, Haley Payne scored eight and dished out four assists, and Audrey Winterhof and Meagan Phipps each scored five points.
"This was a good win," said A-A coach Jeannie Henningsen. "HMS has a good inside post game and we limited their inside shots and rebounds. Courtney and Audrey were offensive-minded and scored some big shots when we needed them."
Alta-Aurelia played Sioux Central in second-round action Tuesday night in Sioux Rapids. The Northwest Conference rivals split their two games during the regular season, with each team winning by just two points.
