SHELDON - Cherokee junior Miah Back, a second-place finisher in the 285-pound weight class at Class 2A Districts here Saturday, earned a berth in the Iowa State Wrestling Championships beginning today in Des Moines.
In District action Saturday in Sheldon, Back pinned Trevor Van Den Top of Hull Western Christian in 35 seconds in his opening match, before falling for the third time this season to Gable Bonner of Estherville-LC in a 3:47 pin. Back didn't have to wrestle back for his second-place finish.
"Miah had an awesone first match," added coach Wood. "We knew his first match was a key for a trip to the State and pinned his man in just 35 seconds."
The Braves other District qualifier, junior Zac Anderson, placed third and did not have a chance for a wrestle-back at 152 pounds. Anderson, Sectional Champion at the Spirit Lake Sectional Feb. 5, lost 7-1 in his opener to Josh King of Sergeant Bluff-Luton, and then won by major decision over Cody Strand of Laurens-Marathon/Sioux Central.
"We wrestled tough, win or lose," said Cherokee coach Jason Wood. "Zac fought hard and fell short in his first match. He looked great in the second round, but King fell short 7-6 in the final and Zac ended up third."
Anderson charted a sparkling 28-9 record this season wih 20 falls.
For Sheldon-South O'Brien, three wrestlers earned State berths, including junior Austin Bainbridge (32-9) at 103 pounds, junior Tanner Matthews (40-2) at 171, and junior Bruce McWilliams (38-5) at 189.
In first-round action at State, Bainbridge meets sophomore Zach Less (29-6) of West Delaware Manchester, Matthews meets senior Jeff Guttry (31-1) of Fairfield, and McWilliams meets junior Colten Riley (38-1) of South Central Calhoun.
Spirit Lake Park won the team title with 93 points, followed by SB-L 87, Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley 69, Central Lyon 58.5, HWC 54, Sioux Center 42, Sheldon-South O'Brien 42, E-LC 40, L-M/SC 29, Cherokee 23, MOC-Floyd Valley 22, Sioux City Heelan 0.
