I am off to Sheldon this week to stretch my brain at a class called "Customizing Your Website." By the time I get back I will either be much smarter or in a stupor. Technology isn't something that comes easily to me but I know it is necessary for me to learn what I can to stay up with the rest of the world.
Judy and I took the original set of workshops a couple of years ago. From there I helped with some setup work and then turned the whole thing over to Judy who has continued to make updates and gone on to attend advanced classes. In contrast, I have forgotten much of what I knew and am hoping this refresher class, as it is billed, will put me back in the ballgame.
We are fortunate that we are part of a system called PLOW (Public Libraries On the Web) that allows us a free presence on the net courtesy of the State Library of Iowa. The template is there and all we have to do is personalize it as we see fit with colors, information and pictures. We (meaning Judy) try hard to keep it updated with current events and happenings.
The biggest item located on the website is our catalog of materials. It can be searched from home and accessed by anyone. Patrons who have an account at the library also have the option of remote access to their checkout records. This allows requesting renewals and placing reserves. In order to have this access, the person must come into the library and fill out a form. Judy will set it up and email the password needed.
On our website at www.cherokee.lib.ia.us you can find information on hours, fax service, children's programs etc. as well as links to other sites that we think would be interesting or helpful. Our monthly newsletter is posted and there is an email contact process in place.
Please take some time to explore our website and see what it offers!
The library will be closed Monday, February 21 on Presidents' Day. Otherwise open hours are Monday, Wednesday, Thursday 10 a.m.-8 p.m., Tuesday and Friday 10 a.m. -5 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
