Pearson, a junior and one of eight Cherokee area grapplers earning a State berth this year, beat sophomore Nate Aitchison of West Hancock Britt 13-11 in an exciting donnybrook at 171 pounds in his opener Wednesday. He then beat junior Tanner Tenley of North Cedar Stanwood 11-9 in second-round Championship bracket Thursday before meeting Everts in the Championship semifinals. The loss sent Pearson to the consolation bracket.
Pearson's fellow Eagle Dillon Mugge (285), also a junior, was pinned in 3:07 by junior Joe Koehn of Valley Community Elgin in his Wednesday opener, but then rebounded in a consolation match with a thrilling pin of senior Ryan Felts of WACO Wayland in 7:38 in double overtime to stay alive in the consolation bracket. Mugge then pinned senior Zach Boyer of Eagle Grove in 4:21 in second-round consolation action Thursday.
However, Mugge ran into familiar Northwest Iowa foe Brendan Ter Wee, who was ranked #1 all season in Class 1A, in third-round consolation action Friday afternoon and lost 7-0 to the West Lyon senior, who is going to Stanford University to wrestle. Mugge had lost three times to Ter Wee this season by close scores of 3-0 and 2-0, before Friday's 7-0 finale.
Also in 2A, Ridge View sophomore Michael Davidson (215) was pinned in 3:17 by junior Kane Seeley of Perry in his opening match, but then rebounded with a 4:30 pin of junior Bradley Grothus of Davenport Assumption in the consolation first round to stay alive in the consolation bracket. Thursday, Davidson lost an 8-0 major decision to senior Alex Rans of West Delaware to end his season.
Ridge View senior Tyler Kenny (145) was pinned by junior Blake Meling of East Marshall/GMG in 5:30 in his opener, and then lost by fall to senior Logan Gushiken of ADM Adel in :45 in the consolation bracket to end his season.
For Sheldon-South O'Brien, junior Austin Bainbridge (103) lost 10-4 to sophomore Zach Less of West Delaware Manchester in his opener, and then rebounded to pin freshman Brody Harrison of Saydel in :26 to stay alive in 2A consolation. Thursday, Bainbridge was pinned in 5:45 by freshman Shadow Leshen of Albia in second-round action to end his season.
Also, S-SOS junior Bruce McWilliams (189) lost 10-0 to senior Jack Manning of Woodward-Granger in his opener, and then lost 3-0 to junior Colten Riley of South Central Calhoun in the consolation bracket to end his season.
