DES MOINES - Jacob Pearson (171) of Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn lost 8-2 to senior Jake Everts of Aplington-Parkersburg in his Class 1A Championship semifinal match Friday afternoon at the Iowa State Wrestling Championships in Des Moines.

Pearson, a junior and one of eight Cherokee area grapplers earning a State berth this year, beat sophomore Nate Aitchison of West Hancock Britt 13-11 in an exciting donnybrook at 171 pounds in his opener Wednesday. He then beat junior Tanner Tenley of North Cedar Stanwood 11-9 in second-round Championship bracket Thursday before meeting Everts in the Championship semifinals. The loss sent Pearson to the consolation bracket.

Pearson's fellow Eagle Dillon Mugge (285), also a junior, was pinned in 3:07 by junior Joe Koehn of Valley Community Elgin in his Wednesday opener, but then rebounded in a consolation match with a thrilling pin of senior Ryan Felts of WACO Wayland in 7:38 in double overtime to stay alive in the consolation bracket. Mugge then pinned senior Zach Boyer of Eagle Grove in 4:21 in second-round consolation action Thursday.

However, Mugge ran into familiar Northwest Iowa foe Brendan Ter Wee, who was ranked #1 all season in Class 1A, in third-round consolation action Friday afternoon and lost 7-0 to the West Lyon senior, who is going to Stanford University to wrestle. Mugge had lost three times to Ter Wee this season by close scores of 3-0 and 2-0, before Friday's 7-0 finale.
