It is actually Peg's week to write the newspaper column but due to circumstances beyond her control, she is home taking care of a broken ankle, so I have an extra turn. Peg took an unfortunate fall on the ice last week and ended up in Sioux City having surgery to have a pin put in. Not exactly what any of us would want to do.
Because of her accident she will not be at work for a few weeks, and even when she comes back her range of motion will be limited for some time. As a result, we are cancelling all of her scheduled March activities, with the exception of Tuesday story times. Those of you who come to preschool story time can expect to see Muffy in the rocking chair. She used to fill in for Mary, and although we won't guarantee a rhythm band, we're sure the kids will have fun.
In the meantime, there will not be any After School Bunch, Youth in Action, Toddler Gang or off site visits. We will concentrate of keeping the children's department staffed and hope that Peg will be back at least a few hours a week later in the month to start plans for April. We wish her well and hope that healing goes quickly.
On a totally different topic, we had a recent book donation that I find very fun and unique. The title is The Dream Team of 1947 with a subtitle the story of how a small Iowa college upset all the major powers to win the NCAA Wrestling Championship in 1947. The small college was Cornell and one of the team members was John Gregg, a 1942 Cherokee graduate.
Call 225-3498 if you're interested in reading the book and we'll get you on the list. Anyone who likes sports, Iowa history or just a good human interest story should enjoy it.
The library is open Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. - 8 p.m., Tuesday and Friday from 10 a.m. -- 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. -- 2 p.m. Hopefully Old Man Winter has done all his damage for the season and we won't have any weather closings, but call ahead if there's any concern.
