4-H Spotlight

Monday, March 7, 2011

With the temperatures outside being a little below bearable at this time of the year, it 's never too early to start planning events for the warmer summer months ahead.

The new 4-H Campers list has just entered our office. 4-H Camp takes place at the beautiful 4-H Center near Madrid, Iowa. The Center consists of over 1100 acres of woodlands, meadows, wetlands, and fields in the heart of the scenic Des Moines River Valley. The area is home to deer, wild turkey, raccoons, migratory waterfowl, and birds, making it a haven to many wild species. The 4-H Center also includes several miles of hiking trails and a small pond.

Campers enjoy a traditional camping experience in one of the many camp cabins, bringing the outdoors within reach. Each cabin has a carpeted floor, electricity, air conditioning, and bunk beds. Bathrooms and showers are located in the main lodge, a short distance from the cabins. Campers are placed in cabins by gender and age with at least 2 counselors. The entire camp eats all meals together in the dining hall.

The Iowa 4-H Center is proud to be accredited by the American Camp Association. Developed exclusively for the camp industry, this nationally recognized program focuses on program quality, health and safety issues, and is required to review every facet of operation.

The Iowa 4-H Center offers a variety of camps to spend time at during the dog days of summer. This year there are even more adventures for campers to discover.

There are camps for techies, outdoorsmen, camping, canoeing, road tripping, farm animals, shooting sports, just for girls, photography. There are even camps for young kids, older kids, families, grandparents and so much more.

If you love getting dirty, the Grossology Camp may be the one for you. This ooey gooey event is filled with hands-on activities using clay, slime, edible play dough and paper mache. Campers will also participate in mud volleyball tournaments and creek stomping adventures as well.

4-H camps are open to ALL YOUTH membership in a 4-H club is not a requirement so bring a friend to share the experience! 4-H Summer Camp is for the young and old alike. Some camps allow 7 year olds and other camps include mom and dad.

4-H camps begin June 5th and continue until August 10th. Camp registration must be postmarked by April 1 to receive the early bird registration discount. Discounts also are offered to multiple siblings and 4-H members.

If you would like more information on the summer camp options available this year, be sure to stop by the Extension Office and pickup a brochure.
