Accident near Holstein claims two lives

At 7:53 a.m. on Monday, Lori Sokolowski 55, Holstein, was westbound on Highway 20, two miles west of Holstein, when she lost control of her vehicle and slid into the path of a vehicle driven by Deron Schmidt 48, Battle Creek, which was eastbound on Highway 20.

Schmidt's vehicle struck Sokolowski's vehicle on the passenger side. Investigating officers said Schmidt was transported to Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, and both Sokolowski and a passenger in her vehicle, 28- year-old Maria Pencook of Albert City, were pronounced dead at the scene.

The Iowa State Patrol was assisted at the site by the Ida County Sheriff's Department and the Holstein Fire and Ambulance.

The investigation is on-going, according to investigating officers.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Holy Name Catholic Church in Marcus. Visitation is 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday at Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee.
