4-H Spotlight

Monday, April 4, 2011

Ah, summer. Just the thought of it. Can you feel the warmth and the sunshine on your face? What do you smell? The fragrance of beautiful flowers? How about the neighbors grill? That's what we are talking about. We just can't wait. But now is the time to make your plans for the summer.

Summer is a time to help your child build wonderful memories. It is also a time for them to make new friends and to have new experiences. That is where this 4-H experience comes into play. First let me preface by saying you do not need to be enrolled in 4-H to participate in this activity.

Every June, over 1,000 teenagers converge on the campus of Iowa State University for 3 days full of speakers, workshops, mixers, dances, a banquet, and community service activities.

If you've completed 8th grade, you're eligible to attend. You don't even have to be in 4-H! You will get to experience campus life, and meet new people from across the state. You will be having fun while learning by doing, dancing the nights away, and serving the community. You will get to learn new things to take back to your community and school, and in the process you might even discover something new about yourself! There are opportunities for you to share your talents with the rest of the delegation through small group discussion, the Conference Chorus, and a Talent Show!

If you have a specific interest in either animal science or crop production, you might want to look into becoming part of the ROUND-UP or CSI: Crops tracks!

What is ROUND-UP and CSI: Crops you may ask? Well Animal Science ROUND-UP includes specialized workshops focusing on beef, sheep, swine, dairy, dairy goat, and horse. You will learn new animal agriculture technologies and be introduced to career opportunities in animal agriculture. CSI: Crops includes specialized workshops focusing on agronomy and its many facets. You will find out about GMO's, GPS, FEEL, ELISA, and DNA. You will conduct a plant crime scene investigation to solve insect, disease, weed, and plant growth problems.

The dates for this State Youth Conference are June 28th thru 30th. The registration deadline is May 25th. For more information, contact Brenda Medick at the Extension Office, 712-225-6196.

The Iowa Youth Conference takes you beyond an extra-curricular activity. It's an adventure. So mark your calendar and join us for a new adventure. Learn something new, make memories by making new friends, give back by doing service projects, be inspired by cool speakers and most of all HAVE FUN and discover 4-H!

Until next time . . .
