Possible gang-related fight in Storm Lake

STORM LAKE - Approximately 9:12 p.m. Saturday, the Storm Lake Police were dispatched to a fight in progress involving a large group of people in the street in front of 1216 Spooner St.

Responding officers were advised that weapons were involved in the fight and that participants were reportedly armed with bats and chains. The reporting party further advised that one or more people were armed with handguns.

Upon the arrival of officers, they learned that several suspects had run and driven from the scene. Police observed a male later identified as Martin Guillan, 21, Storm Lake, lying in the street bleeding from multiple wounds to his head. Guillan was taken into custody by the police and was examined by paramedics at the scene. He was transported to the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center and then airlifted to Mercy Hospital in Sioux City for treatment of wounds suffered in the fight.

At the scene, Storm Lake police took into custody Juan Murillo, 23 and Ricardo Murillo, 19, both of Storm Lake. Both Murillos were suffering from minor wounds, which did not require medical attention.

Also at the scene, police located and seized chains, bats and a portable police scanner. A follow-up search the next day located homemade knives (shanks) lying on the ground.

Multiple witnesses were interviewed, and through interviews police were advised that at least two suspects allegedly displayed handguns, although police were unable to locate any handguns at the scene. No shots had reportedly been fired.

At approximately 9:55 p.m., police located and stopped a vehicle in the 1000 block of Vestal Street which had reportedly been involved in the fight. Two occupants in the vehicle were identified as Eric Reyes, 18, and Jose Magana, 28, both of Storm Lake. Police reported that Magana was suffering from a wound to his ear and covered in blood. He was taken by the police to the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center, where he refused treatment. Both Reyes and Magana were arrested by the police and transported to the Buena Vista County jail.

The Storm Lake Police Department was assisted at the scene by the Buena Vista County paramedics.

Police believe that the fight is gang-related.

Jose Magana has been charged with Rioting, an aggravated misdemeanor; Assault While Displaying a Weapon, which is a Class D felony; and Criminal Gang Participation, which is also a Class D felony. He was booked into the Buena Vista County Jail on a $12,000 cash bond.

Eric Reyes was charged with Rioting and Criminal Gang Participation, and he was booked into the B.V. County Jail on a $7,000 cash bond.

Ricardo Murillo was charged with Assault While Using a Dangerous Weapon, a Class C felony, and Criminal Gang Participation. He was booked into the County Jail on a $19,000 cash bond.

Juan Murillo was charged with Assault While Displaying a Weapon, Rioting, and Criminal Gang Participation. He was booked into the county jail on a $9,000 cash bond.

The investigation is continuing, and additional arrests are expected.
