This year's Cherokee Tomahawk Relays Honorary Referee is Tom Heidenreich of Cherokee.

Tom and his wife Minda have lived in Cherokee for more than 33 years, and their three children - Rachel, Steve, and Molly - all participated in sports and graduated from WHS.

Tom has been involved in sports most of his life. He is originally from Wall Lake, Iowa, where he lettered in football, basketball, and baseball, as well as track. Tom graduated from Morningside College in 1976. He was employed at Cherokee MHI from 1978 until his retirement in 2009.

Throughout the years, Tom has coached Little League and soccer. He was a Little League umpire and member of the Little League Board for many years. He became involved in WHS track meets in 1996 with a little help from his wife who was the WHS activities secretary. Tom served as first-place picker at home track meets for more than 10 years.

Tom enjoys playing tennis, racquetball, and golf. He and Minda have worked the past two summers at Custer State Park in the Black Hills.
