Street construction is scheduled to begin Monday on Cherokee's West Cherry Street project from its intersection with North Highway 59 west to State Street.
Contractors will install road closed signs on Monday. Local traffic will be allowed whenever possible, but should be minimized to allow contractors to complete work without disruption or delays. Extended parking on West Cherry Street will be prohibited throughout the duration of the project. During trenching of utilities and final grading and pavement work, no traffic will be allowed.
Initial work will consist of tree removal and concrete breaking. Pavement will be removed between Highway 59 and North 7th Street thereafter, to be followed by utility and storm sewer installation.
Final grading and pavement in the first phase of the project is scheduled to begin in June. If weather cooperates, work east of North 7th should be completed prior to July 1.
Once utilities are installed east of North 7th Street (mid June), existing concrete will be removed between North 7th and North 11th Streets, with utility installation to begin immediately thereafter, followed by final grading and pavement.
Work west of North 11th Street is to be coordinated with the North 11th Street project -- which will not be bid until later this Spring. The City will be providing information at a later date on this phase of the West Cherry Street project.
Two north-south corridors will be kept open throughout the project. Initially North 7th Street and North 11th Street will be the designated routes. As work proceeds westward, these routes may be relocated to North 5th and/or North 9th Streets.
City officials say that patience and cooperation will be needed for the successful completion of the project in a timely manner. If you have questions or should problems arise, residents are encouraged to contact City Hall at 225-5749.
Updates for the proposed $2.3 million projects (estimated $2 million for West Cherry Street, $300,000 for North 11th Street) will be released to the media and distributed to abutting property owners on an "as needed" basis.
