The Cherokee Washington High Jazz Band and the Aurelia High School Jazz Band will both perform in the State Jazz Band Championships in Des Moines Tuesday. Both earned the right to go to Des Moines by winning trophies at a variety of area contests.
The Iowa Jazz Championships are a unique event that brings together 60 of Iowa's finest high school jazz ensembles (15 from each of the four IHSMA classes) to Des Moines for a great day of jazz each April. The event was founded by Iowa jazz educators over 30 years ago, and continues to be an important event on the Iowa high school band landscape each spring.
Tickets for the day competition are $10. The $10 ticket will get you into all
day time performances at the Civic Center and Convention Complex. Classes 1A, 2A, and 3A perform at the Polk County Convention Complex and Class 4A competition is held at the Des Moines Civic Center. Tickets are for the day contest are not sold in advance.
Tickets to the evening finals, beginning at 7 p.m., are sold for $10 at the Civic Center Box Office at (515) 243-1285. The top two bands from each of the classes play at the evening finals.
The Aurelia Jazz Band (Class 1A) is scheduled to perform at 2:25 p.m. and Cherokee (2A) is scheduled to perform at 12:45 p.m.
