ORANGE CITY - The Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn girls placed second in the Class B competition of the Orange City Unity Christian Track & Field Invitational here Monday night.
Le Mars Gehlen won the Class B team race with 169 points, followed by MMC 105, Remsen St. Mary's 92, SWC 75, Lawton-Brownon 61, Sheldon JV 39, West Sioux 30.
The MMC Eagles notched five first-place finishes, with Erica Dreckman accounting for two individual firsts and the anchor leg on the victorious sprint medley relay. Dreckman won the 100 meters in 13.3, the 200 meters in 27.9, and ran anchor leg on the sprint medley relay with Carly Lehnhoff, Sydney Roberts, and Amanda Hoefling clocked in 2:01.
Other firsts for MMC were Brandi Orr's 88-4 discus throw, and Nicki Schwarz's 5:38 time in the 1500 meters.
Orr also was second in the shot put with a 27-9 1/2 effort, and teammate Taylor Schneider third in the discus with a 78-0 throw.
The Eagles 4x200 relay of Lehnhoff, Roberts, Hoefling and Dreckman was second in 1:57; the 4x800 relay of Sarah Bird, Heather Hoefling, Roberts, and Schwarz was second in 11:18; the distance medley relay of Lehnhoff, Bird, Hoefling, and Schwarz was third in 4:57; the 4x400 relay of Lehnhoff, Heather Hoefling, Roberts, and Amanda Hoefling was third in 4:41; and the 4x100 relay of Heather Hoefling, Bird, Monica De La Cruz, and Jeri Welp was fourth in 1:00.
De La Cruz also was fourth in the 3000 meters in a time of 14:18.
"The throwers and distance runners scored a lot of points to help us finish second and we had many good splits in all relays," said veteran MMC coach Ric Collins.
The MMC girls are scheduled tonight at Hinton and at the Sioux City Relays Saturday.
