Cherokee girls lose tennis match

The young Cherokee Washington High girls tennis team battled throughout but could not break into the win column in a 9-0 loss to Storm Lake in Lakes Conference action here Monday night.

For Cherokee in varsity singles, Sarah Ruehle dropped a hard-fought 11-9 decision to Amanda Kavan at #1, Amber Haupert fell 10-1 to Samantha Kavan at #2, Anna Lehrach lost 11-10 in an exciting 8-6 tiebreaker to Iwa Chanthavong at #3, Emily Estala dropped a 10-0 match to Pamila Vongdeuane at #4, Shelby Bingham fell 10-5 to Cassy Hill at #5, and Nicole Kellen lost 10-1 to Alyssa Sievers at #6.

In varsity doubles, Ruehle and Lehrach lost a competitive match 10-7 at #1, Haupert and Estala fell 10-7 in another well-contested match at #2, and Bingham and Kellen fell 10-4 at #3.

"Sarah and Amber played very long matches in singles and lost tough matches," said Cherokee coach Tricia Koster. "our doubles teams played hard."

In JV singles action for Cherokee, Brianna Fowler lost 8-2 at #1, Mikaela Booth fell 8-2 at #2, Whitney Webb lost 8-4 at #3, Molly White lost 8-1 at #4, Brooke Luetkeman lost 8-3 at #5, and Cassy Joines fell 8-1 at #6.

In JV doubles, Fowler and Booth lost 9-7 in a hotly contested match at #1, Webb and White fell 8-5 at #2, and Joines and Jennifer Davis lost 8-2 at #3.

"I was happy with how Cassy and Jennifer played in their first JV matches so early this season," said coach Koster.

The Cherokee girls play at Spirit Lake Park Thursday night.
