Huseman was returning that day from a legislative session in Des Moines by way of Iowa Falls, where he planned to pick up his young grandson and take him to Aurelia for a weekend with his grandparents.
When he arrived at his daughter's home in Iowa Falls, Huseman told her he wasn't feeling well and thought he should go to the hospital. Following an initial examination in Iowa Falls, he was transported by ambulance to the hospital in Fort Dodge, where he underwent several hours of surgery.
The 58-year-old Huseman, who was re-elected to his current term in last November's election, was released from the hospital on Wednesday and continues his recovery at home in Aurelia.
I spoke with Huseman by phone on Thursday, and he said he definitely will not be returning to Des Moines this week. He has been in contact with his clerk, and his work has been delegated elsewhere for the time being.
