Community Public Participation Training Workshop in Cherokee

Wednesday, April 27, 2011

The Iowa Department of Economic Development is offering Public Participation Training Workshops in 10 Iowa communities in the months of April and May.

Citizens, don't miss this opportunity to learn about the importance of and different approaches to increasing public participation and collaboration in your local planning and project development efforts.

This training will be especially important for the City of Cherokee as it moves forward this Summer in updating its Comprehensive Plan.

Every resident is a stakeholder in the future vision and development of their community, county and region. To assist stakeholders in becoming more engaged in local plan and project development, the Iowa Department of Economic Development is hosting free Public Participation Training Workshops across the State of Iowa, including at the Cherokee Community Center on May 3.

The training workshop titled, "input plan*it," will be presented in a 1-hour Stakeholder Session from noon to 1 p.m Tuesday, May 3. This workshop is provided to support local government recipients of Iowa Department of Economic Development Smart Planning Grants. However, the session is also free and open to anyone from surrounding communities interested in more fully engaging the community in local planning processes.

The Stakeholder Session is aimed at city leaders, city representatives, community residents and stakeholders interested in maximizing public participation in community visioning, projects and plan development. The Stakeholder Session will include:

*An interactive discussion on the important role that community leaders and stakeholders can play in supporting, promoting and enhancing the public participation process; and

*Examples and case studies illustrating active community engagement and partnerships at work in efforts to create plans and projects that get implemented.

Jay Schlinsog from DPN and Dave Ciaccio and Nick Bowden from Community ReDesigned have teamed up with the Iowa Department of Economic Development to present input plan*it. Together, the team's members bring more than 50 years of hands-on experience in planning, research and public participation. They'll share hints, tips, tools and resources to more fully engage the community in local planning processes.

For more information on the stakeholders session, please visit http://www.planiowa.com/workshops.htm.

A second workshop tailored for professional planners is also scheduled for the same date from 1:30 to 4:30 at the Cherokee Community Center. More information on this session can also be obtained from this same web site.

Please RSVP at least five days in advance to:
