STORM LAKE - The improving Cherokee Washington High girls tennis team dropped a hard-fought 6-3 match to Storm Lake in Lakes Conference action here Monday night.
In varsity singles for the WHS gals, Sarah Ruehle lost 10-7 to Iwa Chanthavong at #1, Denise Freed beat Pamila Vongdevane 10-6 at #2, Amber Haupert lost 10-7 to Cassy Hill at #3, Anna Lehrach beat Alyssa Sievers 10-6 at #4, Taylor Meyerhofer fell 10-4 to Emmerly Mai at #5, and Emily Estala fell 10-5 to Lan Brown at #6.
In varsity doubles, Ruehle and Freed beat Chanthavong and Hill 10-3 at #1, Haupert and Estala lost 10-1 to Vongdevane and Sievers at #2, and Lehrach and Meyerhofer lost 10-5 to Mai and Brown at #3.
Cherokee won the JV match 5-4 for the first win of the season.
In JV singles, Shelby Bingham lost 7-1 at #1, Ncole Kellen lost 9-8 in a 7-1 tiebreaker at #2, Brianna Fowler won 9-8 in a 7-4 tiebreaker at #3, Mikaela Booth won 8-4 at #4, Rachel Corken lost 8-3 at #5, and Brooke Luetkeman won 8-3 at #6.
In JV doubles, Bingham and Kellen lost 8-3 at #1, Fowler and Booth won 8-5 at #2, and Luetkeman and Whitney Webb won 8-4 at #3.
"I'm proud of how hard they all worked on JV," said coach Koster. "We lost some tough ones, but they gave it their all."
Cherokee hosts Estherville-LC tonight, and plays at Spencer Monday night.
