CYSBA fund-raiser to improve ball fields road

Monday, May 9, 2011

Other projects for youth, fan safety also involved

The Cherokee Youth Summer Ball Association (CYSBA) has organized a special fund drive to repair and extend the treacherous roadway servicing the CYSBA ball fields and Cherokee School District tennis courts off East Indian Street.

CYSBA officials, who's been concerned with the roadway hazards for several years, have met with the School District and Board of Education, and the City of Cherokee, and received approval to proceed with a project that would extend the narrow south to north road accessing the ball fields to exit east onto North Roosevelt Ave. at the north end of the complex.

The ball fields are located on School District property and it is unknown at this time if the District will contribute to the road project that also accesses the District's tennis court complex.

The plan to make the roadway and parking areas safer for all involved, also includes new steps to the T-Ball Field at the north end, which is now a treacherous, hilly access; new roofs for all eight dugouts and the concession building; new bases and infield clay; and additional safety equipment.

The total project is an estimated $100,000 and the dedicated CYSBA volunteers are seeking donations to help cover the cost of such vital improvements to Cherokee's youth recreation facilities.

David Wilberding of Profesional Surveying Services in Cherokee donated his time to plan the renovation of the existing road.

Those interested can make their donations to CYSBA at Central Bank, 401 W, Main St., Cherokee, Iowa 51012.
