WHS girls drop two tennis meets

Visiting Estherville-LC defeated the Cherokee Washington High girls 7-2 in Lakes Conference varsity tennis action here last week, and the WHS gals dropped a 6-3 decision at Spencer Monday night.

In varsity singles against E-LC for Cherokee, Sara Ruehle lost 10-3 to Erin Olson at #1, Denise Freed beat Allison Hevern 10-3 at #2, Taylor Meyerhofer beat Amanda Heinrichs 10-3 at #3, Shelby Binham lost 10-6 to Bailey Hagan at #4, Brianna Fowler lost 10-5 to Tessa Bernholtz at #5, and Mikaela Booth fell 10-6 to Katlee Schoon at #6.

In varsity doubles, Ruehle and Freed lost 10-4 to Olson and Hevern at #1, Fowler and Whitney Webb lost 10-8 to Heinrichs and Bernholtz at #2, and Bingham and Brooke Luetkeman lost 10-8 to Hagan and Schoon at #3.

In abbreviated JV action for WHS, Webb lost 8-2 at #1, Luetkeman won 9-8, 7-5 tiebreak at #2, Jennifer Davis lost 8-1 at #3, and Kristen Gerhardt lost 8-1 at #4.

"The girls did amazing stepping up to fill positions for varsity girls who were gone on a school (music) trip," said Cherokee coach Tricia Koster. "Everyone put forth that extra effort and it showed."

Cherokee claimed three varsity singles matches at Spencer to tie the match score at 3-3 before the Tigers swept the doubles matches.

In varsity singles for Cherokee, Ruehle lost 10-3 to Sara VanBerkum at #1, Freed beat Sara VanKley 11-10, 8-6 tiebreak at #2, Amber Haupert lost 10-3 to Bradi Baschke at 33, Anna Lehrach beat Ann Magnusen 10-4 at #4, Meyerhofer lost 10-4 to Nicole Staples at #5, and Emily Estala beat Amy McLaury 10-6 at #6.

In doubles, Ruehle and Freed lost 10-4 to VanBerkum and VanKley at #1, Haupert and Estala lost 10-6 to baschke and Staples at #2, and Meyerhofer and Lehrach lost 10-5 to Magnusen and mcLaury at #3.

In JV action for Cherokee, Bingham lost 8-6 at #1, Nicole Kellen lost 8-2 at #2, Fowler lost 8-4 at #3, Luetkeman won 8-4 at #4, Rachel Corken won 8-4 at #5, andWebb lost 9-7 at #6.

In JV doubles, Bingham and Luetkeman lost 9-8, 8-6 tiebreak at #1, Kellen and Corken lost 8-6 at #2, and Fowler and Mikaela Booth lost 9-8, 7-4 tiebreak at #3.
