Nelson, Mathes named team MVPs

ORANGE CITY - Morningside College's Kara Nelson, a past graduate of Cherokee Washington High School, finished as runner-up in two individual events at the Great Plains Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships held here on Saturday. The senior finished second in both the women's 3000-meter steeplechase and the 5000 meters with times of 11:14.27 and 17:56.74, respectively.

Morningside sophomore Breanna Mathes, a past graduate of Galva-Holstein, was the winner of the women's 800 meters, with a time of 2:16.50, and Mustang junior Jessica Hudelson won the 1500 meter run, with a time of 4:40.53. Mathes also anchored the Mustangs to a third place finish in the women's 4 x 800 Relay, with a time of 9:30.60. She was preceded by teammates McKenzie Reece, Courtney Ruff and Jenna Kral.

The Mustang women finished seventh in the women's team standings, with 48 points, and the Mustang men finished eighth in the men's team standings, with 38.5 points.

On Sunday, the Morningside team had a team banquet and Nelson and Mathes both received recognition for their 2011 seasons.

Nelson, a senior, was named the Most Valuable Women's Distance Runner and Mathes, a sophomore, shared the team's Most Valuable Women's Middle Distance Runner award with junior teammate Hudelson.
