The Cherokee Washington High girls tennis team won its opener and lost its second-round match to exit the Girls Class 1A Regional Tennis Tournament in Spencer Saturday.
Cherokee swept the doubles competition and won two of six singles matches to chart a 5-4 win over Estherville-LC in first-round Regional action, before falling 5-0 to Spirit Lake-Okoboji in the second round.
In doubles, Sara Ruehle and Freed won 6-4, 6-2 at #1, Haupert and Estala won 6-4, 6-3 at #2, and Lehrach and Meyerhofer won 6-2, 6-3 at #3.
Spirit Lake-Okoboji won the first five singles matches to end the match early, with Freed losing 0-6, 0-6 at #1, Haupert losing 0-6. 0-6 at #2, Lehrach losing 1-6, 1-6 at #3, Meyerhofer losing 0-6, 3-6 at #4, Estala falling 3-6, 2-6 at # 5, and Bingham leading 6-4 before SL-O clinched the match with a 5-0 lead.
Cherokee also completed a weather makeup match against Spencer in Cherokee Monday night, losing 7-2.
In singles action for Cherokee, Ruehle lost 7-10 to Sara VanBerkum at #1, Freed lost 9-11 to Sara VanKley at #2, Haupert lost 5-10 to Bradi Baschke at #3, Lehrach beat Ann Magnuson at #4, Bingham lost 6-10 to Nicole Staples at #5, and Nicole Kellen lost 6-10 to Amy McLaury at #6.
In varsitt doubles, Ruehle and Freed won 10-7 over VanBerkum and VanKley, Haupert and Lehrach lost 9-11 to Baschke and Staples, and Bingham and Brooke Luetkeman lost 5-10 to Magnuson and McLaury.
In JV action, Brianna Fowler lost 8-9, 3-7 tiebreak at #1, Luetkeman won 8-5 at #2, Rachel Corken lost 8-9, 4-7 tiebreak at #3, Whitney Webb won 9-8, 7-2 tiebreak at #4, Jennifer Davis lost 1-8 at #5, and Cassy Joines lost 2-8 at #6.
In JV doubles, Kellen and Corken lost 6-8 at #1, Fowler and Webb won 8-6 at #2, and Davis and Joines lost 1-8 at #3.
"The girls had great attitudes throughout the season and I was happy with the improvements I have seen in all of them throughout the season," said Cherokee coach Tricia Koster.
