The Memorial Day holiday weekend traditionally signals the start of the summer vacation season. This means more vehicles on our highways, but it doesn't have to mean a higher number of traffic crashes.

The Iowa State Patrol will be out in force during the holiday weekend doing its part to reduce preventable crashes. Troopers will be intensifying their traffic enforcement efforts throughout the state, including the District 6 Cherokee area. All violations will be addressed, but there will be special emphasis on alcohol enforcement, speeding violations, driving while distracted, and seatbelt violations.

The Iowa State Patrol would like to encourage motorists traveling this weekend to plan ahead and consider the following recommendations before driving.

* Before you leave your driveway, fasten your seatbelt. The Memorial Day Holiday coincides with the national 'Click it or Ticket' campaign. The fine for a seatbelt violation is $127.

* Expect other motorists to make mistakes, and drive accordingly. How many close calls have you had in your driving career? Defensive driving was probably the reason it was only a close call and not a crash.

o If your holiday plans include alcohol, add a designated driver to the checklist. Even one drink slows reaction time, and impairs judgment. Give your keys to someone sober.

* Obey the posted speed limit. Excessive speed increases stopping distance, and leads to more serious crashes. Speed continues to be a leading factor in serious injury and fatality crashes.

* Recognize your distractions, and minimize them. Texting and cell phone use are leading distractions, but there are many others too numerous to mention. Devote your full attention to driving when behind the wheel. The fine for a texting violation is $100.

The Iowa State Patrol encourages you to make this Memorial Day weekend memorable for the right reasons. Don't become a crash statistic.

If your organization is interested in an interview to accompany this release, please contact Trooper Vince Kurtz at Kurtz@dps.state.ia.us or 712-262-1424.

The Iowa State Patrol District 6 headquarters is located in Spencer. District 6 provides service to 11 counties in northwest Iowa: Lyon, Sioux, Plymouth, Osceola, O'Brien, Cherokee, Dickinson, Clay, Buena Vista, Emmet, and Palo Alto.

IF the posted speed limits were all set at the 85th percentile speed of free flowing traffic under good conditions, traffic flow would be smoother, the rate of crashes would be minimized, and safety would be improved. Unfortunately, mo$t $peed limit$ are $et below the $afe$t level$ for rea$on$ mo$t ob$erver$ can $ee ea$ily. The science in on our website, maybe you will join us to help get all speed limits set properly with science. James C. Walker, National Motorists Association, www.motorists.org, Ann Arbor, MI
