Area athletes excel at State track & field

DES MOINES - The Ridge View girls led the charge for area prep athletes participating in the 2011 Iowa State Co-ed Track & Field Championships in Des Moines last week.

With only four events qualifying for the State Meet, Cherokee had three events placing in the top eight.

Senior Brock Dagel was eighth in the Class 2A shot put with a personal best 50-10 1/4 effort, sophomore Marc Husman eighth in the 400 meters in a time of 50.8, and junior Taylor Woods placed seventh in the girls shot put with a throw of 37-05, and 20th in the discus with a throw of 93-9.

The Ridge View girls placed fourth in two relay events in Class 2A, including the 4x400 of Sydney Kistenmacher, Jessica Mathes, Nicole Snyder, and Roxanne Grundmeier clocking 4:07.59; and in the sprint medley with Emily Kenny, Emily Schiernbeck, Sydney Kistenmacher, and Grundmeier timed in 1:51.39.

Ridge View's distance medley was fifth in 4:15.34 with Gretchen Kistenmacher, Sydney Kistenmacher, Grundmeier, and Mathes aboard; and 15th in the 4x200 with Gretchen Kistenmacher, Brooke Wiese, Sydney Kistenmacher, and Grundmeier times in 1:49.53.

Mathes also was seventh in the 800 meters in 2:22.03, Kenny 20th in the 100 meters in 13.54, and Gretchen Kistenmacher 22nd in the long jump with a leap of 14-11 3/4.

"It was an amazing season and I'm very proud of our girls and their accomplishments," said Ridge View girls coach Katie Tesch.

For the Ridge View boys, Tyler Kenny was fifth in the 100 meters in 11.77; and the Raptors 4x400 relay was sixth in 3:27.79 with Trevor Irwin, Dru Kenny, Seth Johnson, and Tyler Kenny featured. The 4x200 was fourth in 1:31.53 with Johnson, Tyler Kenny, Dru Kenny, and Colby Stephens aboard. The 4x100 did not qualify for finals and was timed in 44.86 with Johnson, Tyler Kenny, Austin Graff, and Stephens running.

In 1A for the Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn girls, the distance medley relay was 14th in a school-record time of 4:28.6, breaking the old mark set in 1982 of 4:29.4, this year featuring Amanda Hoefling, Carly Lehnhoff, Erica Dreckman, and Nicki Schwarz.

Also for MMC, Dreckman was 18th in the 100 meters in 13.23, and 12th in the 200 meters in 27.0. Brandi Orr fouled on all three of her discus attempts in the rain-soaked ring.

"We have some great underclassmen who can do great things next spring," said MMC coach Ric Collins.

For the MMC boys, Neal Bunt was 20th in the 400 meters in 52.5, and the 4x400 relay of Andrew Hoefling, Dalton Brady, Blake Erdman, and Bunt was 16th in 3:35.45.

The Alta-Aurelia girls in 2A were paced by Audrey Winterhof who was 22nd in the 100 meters in 13.82, and 22nd in the 200 meters in 27.77, and Haley Payne who was 19th in the long jump with a 15-04 1/2 effort.

Tanner Cobb was 14th in the shot put for River Valley's boys in 1A with a throw of 46-1, and Zac Gander did not clear opening height in the long jump.

For South O'Brien's boys in 1A, Ben Wagner was fifth in the long jump with a 6-4 leap, and Matt DeVos was 21st in the 400 meter hurdles in 59.62. Dillon Zimmer was timed in 23.33 in the 200 meters and did not make finals.

For SOS girls, Sierra Matthews was 24th in the shot put with a 29-1 1/2 throw, and Kaitlyn Aberson was 11th in the 800 meters in 2:25.59.
